Making benches. How to make beautiful benches photos and instructions

oldest item furniture that has become accessible to humans. A wooden snag, simply hewn a little with a stone ax and brought into a cave - this is the great-great-ancestor of all modern furniture, closer to which are wooden benches, which have not lost their relevance and demand - neither in the house, nor, especially, in landscape design.

Garden benches made of wood: choosing a style

It may seem only at first glance that the bench is far from being the most important element in landscape design, real professionals say that it is with the bench that garden design begins and ends there. Otherwise, what is all this effort and work for, if no one can enjoy and appreciate it?

That is why it is important to place the bench correctly, choosing a place from which the most beautiful and attractive view opens, and the bench itself can become an elegant accent that complements the beauty of the garden.

A comfortable bench in the garden will become a place where you can hide from the hustle and bustle, admire nature, read a book or listen to music, dream, or just relax. At the same time, wooden benches for a summer residence are a powerful and effective “weapon” landscape design, they can be used for zoning a site, marking boundaries, etc.

At the same time, garden benches differ in their functional purpose:

  • front doors - they are installed at porch, at the entrance of the house. These are wooden decorative benches, richly decorated with carvings, they become a favorite place for photo sessions
  • dining rooms - they are usually placed near B-B-Q, on terraces, in places where the family likes to dine outdoors
  • garden - small benches, next to flower beds, flower garden or plot, it’s good to sit on them and relax while working in the garden. Usually it is very simple in shape, without decorations or aesthetic delights.
  • relaxation - usually they are “hidden” in the most secluded corner of the site, away from strangers and even your own eyes, where the whole environment is conducive to relaxation. The main criterion is comfort, and you don’t have to be modest with the size - you can climb onto such a bench with your feet and even lie down

To make the bench comfortable, you should adhere to the following dimensions:

  • the optimal height is about 40-50 cm, while the legs will rest comfortably on the ground and rest
  • seat width - about 50-55 cm. The seat is made with a slight inward slope - 5-12 cm, so it is more convenient to lean on
  • back height – 35-50 cm
  • backrest tilt - within 15-45 degrees
  • if armrests (hand rests) are installed, then the optimal height for them is 15-20 cm, measured from the seat

Advice! When choosing material for a bench, preference should be given to wood that is especially resistant to moisture and decay - oak, larch, hazel, cherry. But teak is considered to be the “champion” in terms of strength; its wood contains natural resins that protect it from rot and insects (bark beetles, termites).

The choice of the shape and type of bench depends on both your preferences and the style in which the garden is decorated.

For country style, a bench that is as simple in shape as possible, natural in color or painted in a discreet brown shade, is suitable. For the Provence style - a slightly antique bench, quite modest in terms of decoration, painted in blue , white , violet or blue color.

  • The bench must be periodically painted (opened with varnish). It is best to do this at the beginning of the season, before thoroughly cleaning the wood from any remnants of old paint.
  • V hot weather the bench should be placed in the shade - not only you, but also the tree will be comfortable there - ultraviolet radiation negatively affects the quality of wood
  • regularly check the fastening elements (bolts, screws, nails), if necessary, fasten them all the way, do not allow the structure to loosen
  • If you notice traces of rot on one board, replace it immediately, do not let it spread further

Most often made of wood. This is understandable: this is the most accessible and “plastic” material that can play even in the hands of a beginner. The main thing is to approach it wisely. Get a tool and get some theoretical knowledge. And after a little diligence, a place to relax in the fresh air will appear on your summer cottage.

Any homemade bench starts with a diagram. In the age of information, it is quite easy to find inspiration, but sometimes you have to look for the details for productive creativity. So, for a simple request “ drawings of garden benches made of wood“Google brings up a lot of photographs and diagrams, unfortunately, devoid of the details necessary to make these same benches yourself. And when looking for a bench layout, what really matters? Material, production process and, above all, dimensions.

So, choose based on preferences: product with backrest, straight or angled, wide or narrow, long or designed for only two people, dug in or installed on the ground. Next, the material is prepared. And you can start creating.

Drawings of garden benches made of wood

This is something that can be done in one day. The idea is not new, but the drawing is original. The bench, made with your own hands according to the scheme, has been successfully fulfilling its function for a whole season in the open air.

Main drawing

Bench base

First, the side posts of the bench are assembled according to the following schemes:

Keep in mind: any drawing, even the most detailed one, is still a diagram, a sketch from which you need to build. During production, parts will still have to be adjusted depending on the quality and quantity of materials, the availability of the necessary fasteners and decor options. This is a chance to give free rein to your imagination and make an exclusive thing.

A wooden bench for a summer house will last longer if it is coated with a special impregnation. There are enough such compositions on sale. Some of them protect the wood more strongly, but change its shade. Others are able to protect against UV exposure and preserve the texture of the wood. Oil paints on wood perform the same functions, but cover the “wooden pattern”.

Garden furniture can become not only an interior decoration, but also an excellent place to relax. A do-it-yourself bench is a source of pride and a foundation for the future furniture set.

Making this accessory is not as difficult as it seems. It is important to decide on the material and suitable design from the very beginning.

About materials

Plastic parts

Such a bench will have many advantages.

  • Affordable price category.
  • Easy care.
  • Mobility.

We are pleased with the large selection of color options.

Plastic furniture also has its disadvantages.

  1. Cheap look. Unlike wood.
  2. Ability to fade in the sun;
  3. The surface quickly deforms.

What about the tree?

Ideal for making furniture. Amenable to any type of processing, has a noble appearance, does not require complex work during installation. Any type of wood can be chosen. The main requirement is the absence of defects and high-quality drying.

Stone products

Material natural origin with an attractive appearance. Will fit into any interior design. The composition will look stylish and unusual, elegant. A natural stone has many advantages, but is not without its disadvantages. This option is also easy to do.

  • It is not always safe to sit on such benches, for health reasons as well. Wood has no such disadvantages.
  • It is recommended to purchase pillows and warm blankets as a set.
  • Such benches cannot be moved from place to place; only stationary installation is possible.

What about metal?

Garden benches made using the forging method, cold or hot, will be an excellent decoration in any garden.

These are stylish and beautiful designs for which it is better to purchase decorative ornaments. Metal will be a good complement to glass or wood. Keep it simple.

Requirements for the bench

  1. Convenience. The bench should be ergonomic; this is especially important for relaxation. Comfort and convenience play a role. Good option– the presence of a back in the product.
  2. It is important that the bench can withstand even serious loads. Accordingly, the quality of fittings and furniture should be at their best.
  3. The material must withstand any changes in weather conditions without deformation, since it is created for outdoor installation.

Design and its features

1500 millimeters - this length for the back and seat of the bench is enough for three people to sit comfortably. Other dimensions also matter. The seat width reaches 400 mm, the back angle is 18-20 degrees. The height of the backrest is 900 millimeters, the height of the seat is 450.

From the materials we need to take:

  • Varnish, primer;
  • Sandpaper effect for wood;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electric planer for wood. We will use it to process chamfers and polish the surfaces of boards.
  • We will cut the boards using an electric jigsaw.
  • Required number of screws.
  • We will strengthen the structure of the bench with our own hands using self-tapping screws with dimensions of 40 by 40 mm.
  • We make blanks for the front legs of the bench. Thickness – 35-40 millimeters, size – 360 by 150.
  • Holders for the back and legs of the bench also require separate blanks. The thickness is the same 35-40 millimeters, but the size is 900 by 150.
  • You cannot make a product with your own hands without wooden boards. The thickness is the same, and the dimensions are 1500 by 150 mm.

We make a wooden structure

  • You can immediately purchase boards for your bench that have the right size. If suitable option no - we use a jigsaw to cut the boards with our own hands. Miter saw will also become an indispensable assistant. This can be done quickly.
  • The wood must be carefully processed after it has been achieved required length. Sanding requires blanks for the seat and backrest. You need to use an electric planer to process the ends of the boards. The best option– rounded shapes.
  • We set the correct angle of inclination with our own hands to the long rear legs of the bench. They also play the role of the frame of the entire structure. We apply markings to two wooden blanks with a length of 900 millimeters. It's not all that difficult to do.
  • 400 millimeters is the height of the bench; we mark it with our own hands first. No additional processing is needed in this area of the material. We make a 20 degree cut along the entire length of the product, starting from the segment. This is how the angle of inclination for the backrest is formed. The angle of inclination and height on the two legs at the back should be the same.
  • The bench legs are assembled first. 280 mm – distance between elements front and rear. The beam that connects the legs is cut across the entire width of the bench. Its size is 500 mm. It’s good if the strapping is on top and bottom.
  • The sides of the bench are connected to each other with your own hands after the assembly is completed. To connect, we use boards on which you will need to sit. They are screwed to the upper bars of the trim using self-tapping screws. Gaps between wooden blanks must have different sizes. They help remove moisture and organize circulation.
  • Let's move on to strengthening the bench with our own hands. Without this action, the product will not be durable and stable. We use timber to make bottom trim on the legs. We screw two blanks with a length of 1500 mm to the front and rear elements. There can be only one crossbar if there is not enough lumber.
  • We install the backrest in the bench with our own hands. This is one of last steps. It is recommended to maintain a distance of 380 millimeters from the seat for the second board, 200 millimeters from the seat for the first.
  • All that remains is the final covering of the bench. Varnish and deep impregnation will always help provide maximum protection from external influences. You can forget about pests, mold and moisture.

How to work with metal?

Garden plots are decorated not only with furniture made of wood. Metal can also become an indispensable assistant in creating comfortable places to relax. It is not necessary to master hot forging techniques for this.

Cold forging is also quite suitable for this. We simply weld a frame from metal blanks into a single structure. Decorative elements will enhance the appearance.

detailed instructions

  • We start with developing the dimensions and dimensions of the bench. The standard back height is 800-900 mm. Width – 400-500 mm. Length 1500 mm. The most simple work– with angular shapes. It is recommended to start working with simpler models.
  • We make a frame for the seat. We cut out a metal pipe. The dimensions we need are: 2 fragments of 400 mm and 2 of 1500 mm. We weld the parts so that they become rectangular shape. It is permissible to weld 2 additional stiffeners to make the structure more durable.
  • Next we need legs. We cut the metal pipe into 4 parts, 460 mm each. The blanks are then connected to the corners of the bench. Additional stiffening ribs between the front and rear legs will not be superfluous.
  • We make the back. We weld together one piece 1500 mm long into another 440 mm long. We then weld the structure to the part of the bench, which is already ready. 15-20 degrees – optimal angle backrest tilt. Then your vacation will be comfortable.
  • The backrest can also be strengthened with stiffening ribs.
  • At the final stage, all seams are cleaned. The frame is coated with a primer.

Beam and board: the simplest forms

Execution and design options exist a large number of. There are also the simplest ones, some prefer wood carving. They become real works of art.

A wooden bench without a back is the simplest solution. It is allowed to use boards up to 75 mm thick. Each element consists of two parts.

We assemble a seat from two boards, the ends are beveled. It is better to provide a gap between the elements if you plan to place the structure on open area where there is no heating. The gaps compensate for the swelling of the wood and allow you to get rid of moisture in large quantities.

Each leg consists of two glued elements. A pin or dowel will make the connection more reliable. Two short beams for support must be secured to each of the legs. This will allow you to secure the seat itself. Self-tapping screws and glue, grooves – irreplaceable helpers for fastening. Beams and legs are attached to each board during the final stages of work.

Radius cuts and curly elements complicate the work a little, but if desired, this task can be solved without problems. For example, choose a rectangle shape.

The drawings are not dogmas; they can be changed at your discretion.

The beam is at the bottom unless the bench is very long. The beam itself becomes a stiffening rib in such a situation. The dowel involves the use of both closed and open installation, last option quite unusual. The material can be in any form. It is even possible to use options that are used to build wooden houses.

Garden bench cannot be considered solely as an ordinary piece of furniture used for recreation. This type of furniture can become a spectacular decoration summer cottage. A DIY wooden bench can become a key component of an entire composition, emphasizing the beauty and benefits of landscape design in your garden or yard. In this case, an important place is given to the style, materials and location of the future product.

Originality and ease of manufacture are the main advantages of a bench made of logs

Wood is the most suitable material to create pieces of furniture. It has beneficial properties:

  • absorbs heat;
  • has a noble appearance;
  • Easily amenable to any type of processing.

Wooden bench is central element relaxation areas in the garden

Note! Do-it-yourself benches or wooden benches can be created using any type of wood. The only requirement for the material is that the raw material must be well dried.

You should not use wood with external defects. The exception is some products whose design allows for cracks. Knots and burrs will have to be eliminated in any case.

Benches can be created from any type of wood - the main thing is that the material is well dried

A number of requirements are also put forward for the structures themselves:

  • safety - is ensured due to several points: correct calculation of the structure, selection of materials and fasteners corresponding to the weight loads, careful assembly. Not last value has quality materials and fittings;

Wooden bench in eco-style, located on the terrace of a private house

  • resistance and durability - since these products are intended for outdoor use, the raw materials used for their manufacture should not have serious defects or damage. In addition, it is desirable that the material be resistant to negative impact climatic and weather fluctuations;

  • ergonomics – the design you develop should be comfortable. In most cases this type products are created specifically for relaxation, so it is recommended to use drawings of structures with a back to create a bench with your own hands from wood.

Design and photos of wooden benches and benches with your own hands for the garden

The choice of design determines the direction of all subsequent work. The design of the future product will certainly have an impact on the landscape, the design style of the space where garden furniture will be installed. Therefore, the choice of project should be approached thoroughly. For inspiration, you can use photos of benches for a gazebo with your own hands, which you can find on the Internet or on the pages of magazines on gardening and gardening.

Bench option built around a tree

The simplest design on two supports is suitable not only for a gazebo, but also for a veranda or terrace. The supporting part is assembled from boards. All leg elements must be the same size. The boards are laid in pairs, and each subsequent floor of the structure must be perpendicular to the previous one. The seat can be made from timber. You choose the length, the main thing is that the structure does not sag.

Wooden benches are distinguished by their beauty and high environmental friendliness

Helpful advice! These types of structures can be made long by adding additional supports. Thanks to this, you can install a long bench along external wall at home or inside a gazebo.

The supporting part of wooden boards can be made more durable and reliable by replacing it with hollow building block. In this case, the seat bars will be fixed in the holes of the supports. Don't forget to first round the edges on the wooden elements to make it more comfortable to sit on.

Do-it-yourself benches and log benches: photos, design solutions

Buying lumber is more expensive than using improvised means. Creating a bench from a log with your own hands is the most budget method organizations cozy zone relaxation at the dacha. To do this, you can use a long trunk of a fallen tree that is taking up space on your property, as long as the wood is not too deteriorated or damaged by insects.

Log bencha budget option garden furniture

Prepare the necessary tools:

  • grinder;
  • grinder discs intended for cutting wood;
  • axe;
  • chainsaw;
  • sanding machine or sandpaper with coarse and fine grains.

Manufacturing process garden bench from a log

To make a bench, you will need to cut 2 pieces of the same length from the tree. As a result, you will end up with 2 thick stumps of the same height. They will be used as supports. Cut a thick, long board from the core of the remaining trunk. It will become the seat of the future design. The width of the board must match the diameter supporting parts.

Diagram of a simple bench made of logs: A - support; B - seat

To secure the seat to the support, cut grooves in the top of each stump. The design will be considered correctly executed only if the seat board fits tightly into the grooves and is held in them by gravity. For greater reliability, you can use nails or pin connections.

For creating a bench A chainsaw is needed from a fallen tree

Helpful advice! The seat board must be well sanded. Support stumps can also be freed from bark and treated with sandpaper, or, conversely, left untouched if you want to achieve a unique appearance.

Recommendations for making a bench from a log with your own hands

To make a bench from a fallen tree, you will need a chainsaw. The main construction material will be a barrel with a large diameter. Minimum length- 1m.

A bench made of logs will highlight the natural landscape of your garden plot

The product creation technology looks like this:

  • Markings are applied to the log using a pencil or marker so that the material is divided in two. But the cut will not be made in the middle, but with a slight offset to one side from the center of the log. The result should be 2 parts of unequal size. The smaller one will be used to make the backrest, the larger one will serve as a seat;
  • After cutting the log in two, the surface of the manufactured parts should be leveled at the place of the cut so that the resulting smooth planes. Irregularities are carefully removed using a chainsaw;

A log bench can become unusual decoration local area

  • Turn the seat piece over so it's flat. Find the highest point of the circle and mark it in the form of two lines connecting to each other. You should end up with a triangle with a rounded base and equal sides, the apex of which is directed towards the plane of the seat. In this case, the height of the triangle should be small so that the structure does not fall apart. Simply put, you will need to cut out a small “piece of cake” closer to the edge of the circle. The cut element must be solid; it will run along the entire length of the seat. This is done in order to subsequently perform a type of fastening called a dovetail;

Device diagram garden bench with log back

  • the resulting element should be divided in half along its length. The back of the seat (its back part) will rest on these parts, so in the appropriate places you need to make triangular cutouts that match in size and shape with the supporting elements;
  • To create a strong support, similar notches must be made in the side of the seat. The recesses on the back and seat should be mirrored. The ends of the triangular supports will be inserted here.

Combined bench built from logs and metal

Helpful advice! The design turns out to be quite rough. After assembly, you can modify it: give the seat and back a shaped shape, sand it, decorate the product with carvings.

Place the bench on legs made from thick tree stumps. The same groove connection method can be used here.

Products from scrap materials: do-it-yourself benches and benches made from pallets

At first glance, it may seem that the creation of even the simplest bench will require a significant investment of time and effort from you. In fact, almost any available materials can be used to arrange the territory of a summer cottage. To understand this, just look at the photo of benches made from pallets with your own hands.

White painted bench made from euro pallets with soft seat and pillows

You don't need to have specialized knowledge or experience using woodworking tools to create a similar structure in your yard. Just be patient and have 3-4 on hand unnecessary pallet made of wood.

The tools needed for the job can be found in almost every home:

  • a small power saw (usually used for cutting branches in the garden or trimming bushes);
  • electric screwdriver;

Example unusual design wooden bench from pallets

  • grinder (it can be replaced with sandpaper);
  • hand saw;
  • square;
  • pencil.

To fasten the parts you will need nails and screws.

From pallets it is possible without special effort create beautiful and functional garden furniture

Do-it-yourself wooden bench: photo and assembly of the structure from pallets

The design is so simple to implement that you don’t need drawings to make a wooden bench from pallets with your own hands. To do this, just use your imagination.

Note! Some pallets must be cut to obtain additional elements for assembling the structure.

Pallet scheme

The simplest version of the product is created on the basis of two pallets, attached to each other at right angles. As a result, the lower tray will be a seat, and the upper one can be used as a backrest. To make the design more neat and harmonious, the pallets can be trimmed a little. Fixation is carried out using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws.

Decorated with beautiful linen pillows

The side area can be strengthened with the help of additional boards connecting the backrest and seat parts at an angle. Use the remaining pallet scraps after the main cutting of the structure to create these parts.

In a similar way, you can create a bench by removing the back from the structure and adding legs to it. Use nails or screws for these purposes.

Photos of wooden benches with your own hands: creating combined products

Combining textures, colors and materials is encouraged in modern design. If you are still thinking about how to make benches for your summer cottage with your own hands, be sure to use this method. As a result, you can get cutting-edge designs with minimal effort.

Elegant combined bench made of wood and metal

If we take metal products as an example, in this case you will be dealing not only with advantages, but also with disadvantages. Such structures are durable and this is their main benefit.

Disadvantages of metal benches:

  • high cost;
  • heavy design and bulkiness;

Wooden garden bench with metal frame

  • the surface of the material is too hot in summer time and becomes very cold in cloudy weather, which negates all comfort.

All these shortcomings can be easily compensated for by making a combined bench with your own hands: photo successful combinations are not limited to one or more variations. There are a lot effective solutions that can be easily implemented.

Combination bench classic shape made of metal and wood

There is a significant advantage to using metal to create structural support parts. The legs of products made entirely of wood, in contact with the ground and grass, constantly become damp. Mold and fungi begin to develop in them, which reduces the service life of the product. Metal is not afraid of such operating conditions.

Ideas for creating your own benches made of wood and metal

The simplest project involves creating a bench where the supporting part is made of metal, and the material for the back and seat is wood. To do this, you need to weld two rectangles or squares from a profile pipe. It is better if it is a square profile.

Bright wooden bench with frame made of profile pipe

Jumpers need to be welded on the inside of the rectangles. A seat made of boards will be installed on them. Fixation is carried out due to the weight of sitting people. The design turns out:

  • reliable;
  • practical;
  • stylish;
  • functional;
  • durable.

Diagram of the metal frame of a combined bench

You can create more complex design, equipping it with a backrest and armrests. In this case, profiled pipes with a square cross-section are used to create frame base in the form of a frame with jumpers and supporting parts for securing the seat and armrests. By increasing the width of the seat, you can create a comfortable sofa with soft cushions.

This idea can be used to organize a whole patio in the yard or on flat roof cottage Create your own furniture composition consisting of a table and two large benches or several single seats.

Original bench design located in the courtyard of a private house

For the table, use a similar set of materials: profiled pipe (frame) and wooden boards(table top). When installing wooden elements, be sure to leave a small gap (3-4 mm). Since wood is subject to deformation changes under the influence of humidity and climatic conditions, this gap is necessary in order to compensate for its expansion. Otherwise, the parts of the back, seat and table top will warp.

Basic drawing of a garden bench with a metal frame and a wooden seat

Concrete, like metal, has long periods operational service. It is completely invulnerable to weather conditions, therefore it is considered one of the most durable materials. Having understood the technology of creating simple benches from wood, it will not be difficult for you to make a bench from the same material, only on a concrete base.

Note! The design is very simple and does not require significant financial investments.

Rice. 1-1. Device diagram garden bench made of wood and concrete slabs with installation dimensions

First, you will need to prepare the parts for further assembly. Wooden elements the benches will be made on the basis of boards with a section of 15x3.8 cm. They need to be sawn in a special way so that as a result you get a set of ready-made parts for assembly.

Dimensions table for cutting boards:

In addition, square shaped concrete slabs will be needed to form the base:

  • thickness – 5 cm;
  • length – 50 cm;
  • width – 50 cm.

The required number of concrete parts is 12 pcs.

Rice. 1-2. The procedure for making a garden bench from wood and concrete slabs: 1 - preparation wooden parts; 2 - marking the boards, drilling holes in them; 3 - marking concrete slabs, drilling holes in the slabs

Boards 200 cm long should be marked for making holes. To do this, two marks are placed (with a distance from the end of 10 cm and 40 cm). On the other side, similar markings are applied. After all the boards (200 cm) are marked using a drill with a diameter of 1.8 cm, holes are made in them at the indicated points.

Rice. 1-3. The procedure for making a garden bench from wood and concrete slabs: 4 - preparing the backrest parts for assembly; 5 - applying glue

Holes for fasteners should also be made in concrete slabs. In this case, a distance of 7.5 cm is taken from the top edge, and 10 cm from the left and right ends. Draw lines and find the point of their intersection. This will be considered a control marking for making holes. For this procedure, you will need a drill bit designed for working on concrete surfaces.

Rice. 1-4. The procedure for making a garden bench from wood and concrete slabs: 6 - assembling the backrest; 7 - coating wooden parts with an antiseptic solution

Assembling a wooden bench with your own hands: the initial stage

To increase their service life, wood elements must be treated with antiseptic agents.

After the material has completely dried, you can start assembling the backrest:

  • make marks on one of the long boards (200 cm), retreating 50 cm from the edge. The edge line of the concrete slabs will be placed here;
  • make an indent of 15 cm from the previously made marks (50 cm), moving further towards the central part of the board. This is the area for fixing the first boards;

Rice. 1-5. The procedure for making a garden bench from wood and concrete slabs: 8 - assembly of the main part; 9 - insertion and fastening of threaded rods

  • make a 17.5 cm indent from the fixation area of the first boards in the same direction. This zone will be located between the boards from which the back is made;
  • make two more marks (each 15 cm) with a gap of 5 cm (the distance between the back elements).

Helpful advice! All of the indicated markings are clearly visible in the diagram (Fig. 1-1), you should not have any special problems with this stage. Use the drawings to guide and control your actions during the manufacturing process.

Wooden bench seat mounted on concrete blocks

Process adhesive composition for wood, a zone 15 cm long. Previously prepared boards (65 cm) must be attached to this area. Install self-tapping screws to increase the strength of the fastener. In a similar way, boards 17.5 cm long are installed in sections corresponding to their length.

Wooden benches located under a canopy in the courtyard of a country house

To ensure good adhesion of the adhesive, clamp the lengths (17.5 cm) until the composition is completely dry. Next, you should treat the entire back with an antiseptic composition. Increase the level of durability of wooden parts and their decorative properties varnish will help. Coat the wood with the compound.

Assembly of the structure: installation of the frame part of the product

It is recommended to start assembling the frame part of the product from both sides simultaneously. This will eliminate distortion and the need to redo the work. The assembly diagram involves alternate installation of a long board and concrete slab. The elements are connected through holes using 4 M16 threaded rods (two rods on each side of the bench). The required length of fasteners is 55 cm.

Diagram of a bench made of cedar bars and hollow building blocks

Use M16 washers and nuts to secure the rods. To avoid unevenness, twisting should be done simultaneously on each side.

Drawing of a bench made of wood with your own hands and a description of the manufacturing process

This project looks like a regular bench. The only nuance that distinguishes this bench from more primitive designs is the concave seat.

Dimensional table for manufacturing parts according to drawings:

Do-it-yourself wooden bench: how to assemble the seat correctly

Before you begin assembly, you should prepare all the parts for work. Saw the timber and boards to the length indicated in the table so that you get blanks.

The most difficult stage of building a bench is forming the supporting parts for the seat. It is necessary to strictly follow the recommendations for applying markings in order to make correct elements designs. To do this, make two marks at the edges with a distance of 7.5 cm from the bottom of the workpiece. Mark another point in the center, only now the marking is done with an indentation of 4.5 cm.

Rice. 2-1. Scheme for making a wooden bench with a concave seat

Helpful advice! To get an accurate and neat cut, use a flexible plastic ruler when connecting the marking points. Electric jigsaw will help make a controlled cut, which must subsequently be processed using sandpaper.

Now that all the structural parts are prepared, you can begin the actual assembly. Support elements for the seat you need to attach it to two drawers (upper). This needs to be done in such a way that there is one piece on each edge and another one is placed in the center.

Rice. 2-2. The procedure for assembling a wooden bench with a concave seat

Then, with an indentation from the edge (by the width of the leg), the supports are installed. During the assembly process, self-tapping screws must be used to secure parts. On top of the resulting base it is necessary to secure the boards that form the seat. To make it comfortable to sit on the bench without fear of getting hurt or ruining your clothes, the heads of the screws should be sunk into the wood.

The final stage of creating the design

Wood is warm and pleasant to the touch, which makes it ideal as a material for creating benches and other garden furniture

At the last stage of manufacturing the structure, the product is finalized and finishing. Recessed screw heads can be masked using wood mastic. You need to select a mixture that is suitable in shade and add small sawdust to it. This composition fills the voids that were formed after tightening the screws. The dried surface is treated with fine-grain sandpaper and then coated with a protective antiseptic and varnish.

Process of creation corner bench for a recreation area in the local area

There are many interesting designs and effective combinations of materials.

The use of such decorative elements will only improve the bench:

  • forged patterns (decoration of metal surfaces);
  • glass, pebbles and pieces ceramic tiles(creating mosaics on concrete and wooden surfaces);

A wooden bench located in the recreation area can be used as a table

  • wire inlay and decorative elements(mounted into wood by cutting);
  • patterns obtained by burning;
  • carved patterns.

Helpful advice! If you want to give the wood a special color, use a colored varnish or pre-treatment stain surfaces.

Wooden bench painted cheerful yellow, fits harmoniously into overall design recreation areas

There are two technologies for burning patterns on wood:

  1. Pyrography – the main working tool is a “hot pencil”. All patterns are made by hand. The exclusive backrest of the bench can be ordered individually at furniture factory, where the patterns will be made with a laser.
  2. Pyrotyping is the stamping of patterns using temperature.

The easiest way to decorate a structure is to add voluminous decor, making a single composition from corners, layouts, rosettes and bas-reliefs. Elements can be wooden, metal, composite, etc. By combining different textures you can achieve a unique design.

There is, perhaps, no such yard, no matter where there is a bench - an invariable attribute of relaxation and communication. This item is convenient and useful, found everywhere both outdoors and indoors. There are countless forms of bench designs, however, they are all united by two basic principles of construction: stability and comfort. You should build on them when making a bench with a backrest with your own hands.

Types and features of bench designs

The classic design of a bench is a seat, back and supports. It can be complemented by armrests, a built-in table, a canopy from rain and sun, and much more. The form can be simple, minimalistic or of unprecedented beauty and complexity, the main thing is that it harmoniously complements the surrounding space and is comfortable for relaxation.

The idea of what the shop will be like depends on the following points:

  • Accommodation area:
  • in the garden, near the house (they decorate the area, have a mostly stationary, convenient form);
  • terrace (lightweight, convenient for tea drinking and socializing);
  • barbecue or relaxation area (the form must be designed for a certain number of people);
  • near water (corrosion- and rot-resistant material of the bench);
  • The installation location is permanent or the bench needs to be moved, brought in/out;
  • Shape: straight, round, semicircle, angular, curved;
  • Materials of manufacture: wood, metal, stone/concrete, combination of materials.

At home, in the country, the material for constructing a bench is often improvised materials, used things, such as a bed, a door, a closet, pallets (pallets), chairs, logs, driftwood, cinder blocks and much more. The result is original, interesting items in a vintage or rustic style. Pallets and furniture made from them have become an “untilled field” for ideas, a fairly common creative material.

You can include useful elements in the design of a bench, for example, make the seat folding, and use the sewn-in space underneath as a storage container. A folding table would be useful as part of the design of a bench or shoe rack under the seat of a bench in the hallway.

Designing a comfortable bench with a back

Let's start looking at the design with support posts. They often have P or X-shape, their stability has been tested by experience. The shape can also be solid ( wooden beams, stone slabs), cast (formed from cast iron or concrete, the back goes into supports), in the form of legs, curved metal or forged elements.

The seat is a part of the bench that should be comfortable and resistant to stress. It is made continuous or with intervals ( wooden blocks, metal pipes, rods). The solid seat is comfortable, however, it is necessary to ensure that water does not stagnate on it after precipitation. The edges of the seat should be rounded to avoid injuring your legs. Optimal length 1500 mm, width 400–450 mm, length of one seat 480 mm (of course, all sizes are selected individually). There are designs where the seat and back are made in one line (the back smoothly transitions into the seat by means of a bend), such benches are comfortable, often found in city parks, their supports are cast from cast iron or concrete, you can repeat this shape from wood or bend it from a profile pipe .

A significant part in the convenience of the bench is given to the distance from the seat to the ground (floor) level; it should be 400–450 mm. It is necessary that the feet touch the base.

The back makes an object out of a bench long rest, it allows you to relax not only the leg muscles, but also the back muscles. Important role Here the angle of inclination relative to the seat and the height of the backrest play a role. Based on human physiology, 10–20 degrees is considered the most comfortable. angle of deviation of the back from the perpendicular, height from 360 mm (since the human spine has an S-shaped bend, the height of the back is divided into two parts: 180–240 mm to the fulcrum - the place where the back does not fit and + another 180–240 mm - segment of contact with the back). The back should not be massive and outweigh the bottom of the structure.

Advice! The gap (clearance) between the back and the seat should not be made large if the person will sit on the bench Small child he will not have the opportunity to lean his back.

Choosing material for making a bench with a back

The most convenient and inexpensive material for manufacturing is wood. The wooden bench combines a balance of beauty and comfort and looks great in any space. Wood is a pliable material for the manufacture of various shapes and decorative elements, has a pleasant tactile sensation, does not overheat in the sun and does not overcool in the cold.

A simple wooden bench can be made quite quickly with your own hands; a minimal set of tools is needed. You can use inexpensive types of wood. Resistance to moisture, ultraviolet radiation, fungus and insects is ensured by modern protective equipment for impregnation and coating of wood surfaces. The weight of the product is optimal for moving.

Disadvantage wooden benches It is considered fragility, the tree tends to dry out over time, the joints become loose. The structure can be strengthened various elements assemblies and fastenings made of metal (corners, threaded ties, self-tapping screws instead of nails) strengthening joints with glue. If supports need to be dug into the ground, they should be protected from rotting by soaking them in oil/resin-containing products.

Advice! Wood is a flammable material, so a bench located near a fire (fire, barbecue, stove) must be treated with a fire-resistant solution (fire retardant), which will help resist fire for some time.

Metal is a reliable and durable material with proper care and operating conditions. It produces sophisticated, “airy”, “lace” designs. Main disadvantage- corrosion, which is eliminated protective coating surfaces with primer, paint, enamel, repeated periodically as necessary. Flexible metal can be shaped into different shapes. Square bench design profile pipes will be stable, solid and light. The square section is the most convenient to install. The most beautiful benches are made from forged elements.

Assembly metal product very strong, carried out using welding seams and threaded fasteners. Necessity of availability welding machine and the ability to use it makes installation at home somewhat difficult.

The seat and back of a metal bench are almost always covered with pillows, covers, or a blanket, since tactile sensations not always pleasant. The thermal conductivity of metal is higher than that of wood, so achieving a comfortable temperature balance between the body and metal surface It’s difficult, and it’s pointless to heat the bench with yourself.

The concrete bench is practically a sculpture. In this case, any shape can be achieved with a lot of effort and effort. A frame assembled from metal is placed in formwork and filled with concrete (the concrete hardening period is 1–2 months). Basically they make some parts of the structure and combine them with other materials. It has heavy weight, not intended for movement. There is no doubt about immobility. Resistant to any weather conditions, durable.

Concrete complexes of benches and containers for planting plants with the installation of lighting elements look great. Practical for placement near the water.

Advice! For heavy benches, you should prepare a flat platform from layers of sand, gravel, and crushed stone so that it does not sink into the ground.

The most common type of bench is a design with a combination of materials. It is preferred in most cases, since it can be combined reliable frame(metal), comfortable seat with back (wood), while achieving beauty, durability, convenience and lightness of form.

When buying material, make sure of its quality; you need to choose a dry tree so that it does not leak; remember the size of the parts. If there is a drawing with the specified dimensions, the material can be cut at the place of purchase, which will facilitate its transportation.

Drawing, material calculation, preparation for construction

A do-it-yourself bench begins with an idea, which is first embodied in a drawing. The drawing must be accurate and detailed and will need to be referred to throughout the work. You can make two drawings: a bench frame and a seat with a back, if the materials are different. The option when the supports are dug in (concreted) must provide for an additional length of the supports.

The drawing of the bench will show the number of parts, and the dimensions will help determine the amount of material consumed.

Tools: saw, plane, drill, tape measure, angle meter, wrench.

Materials: pine board 25x75 mm, 40x80 mm, 40x120 mm, bolts with nuts 9 mm - 8 pcs., self-tapping screws, sandpaper.

File the parts in the required quantity to size and sand them. Proceed with assembly.

How to make it yourself: the order of connecting parts

  1. Assembling the bench supports: mark and drill holes for the bolted connection, before fixing the parts with clamps. Tighten the connections of both sidewalls;
  2. Connecting supports with jumpers: attach power jumpers to the structures of the side supports using self-tapping screws according to the drawing;
  3. Assembling the backrest and seat: screw the strips to the side supports with self-tapping screws, maintaining an even gap between them. Recess the heads of the screws into the strips;
  4. Grinding joints and sharp corners;
  5. Application of decorative and protective coatings.

If there is a desire to emphasize the texture of the wood, then the surface is not treated with stain. water based(untreated wood swells with water) of the selected color, then varnish the surface in several layers according to the instructions on the package (the varnish should be for external purposes with good wear resistance, for example, yacht varnish). Between applying layers, the varnish must dry (dust stage - when dust does not stick to the surface and can be wiped off). Before applying the next layer, the previous one needs to be lightly sanded; this will not affect the transparency of the varnish.

If you decide to paint a bench, then before painting you need to apply a base (a product for protecting and reducing wood porosity) to the surface; it will give a good adhesive effect and the paint will last longer. Then apply paint for exterior purposes in several layers.

All painting work should be carried out outdoors; a respirator must be used indoors.

To make it more decorative, you can brush the surface; the structure of the wood will become more expressive. The naturalness of wood is emphasized by the application of impregnating oil-wax products with a water-repellent and protective effect.

Today, the choice of means to protect wood, as well as all kinds of paint coatings represented very widely. It will not be difficult to find a product that will combine the necessary qualities.

Whatever material and design is chosen, the bench will be unique because it was made by hand. Remember about safety measures; all work must be accompanied by the use of protective equipment.
