DIY knife sheath. How to make a leather sheath with your own hands at home (with master class)

A good knife is necessary for every hunter, fisherman and tourist. It is very important that the sharp blade is reliably protected in field conditions. Every self-respecting hunter has several protective covers, and many hunters prefer to make a knife sheath with their own hands from leather. The ability to work with leather is always useful for a real man, so today in the article we decided to tell you how to make a sheath out of leather with your own hands so that it is comfortable, practical and beautiful.

How to sew a leather sheath with your own hands?

Making a knife case from leather with your own hands is not at all difficult, the main thing is to understand the basic principles of operation. When performing all manipulations, show due diligence and accuracy so that the result pleases you.

Let's divide the whole process into several stages:

  1. Preparatory, which includes preparing materials and tools, as well as making a template.
  2. Making a pattern from leather.
  3. Skin formation.
  4. Preparing for firmware.
  5. Fixing the sheath mount.
  6. Product firmware.

Let's look at each stage in more detail.

Tools and materials for making sheaths

If you have old boots, then their tops can be used to sew a leather sheath with your own hands.

Important! The piece of material must be thick enough and durable.

In addition to leather, for work you will need following materials and tools:

  • A piece of thick felt impregnated with epoxy resin, or a strip of plastic the size of the blade (2 mm thick) for making an insert.
  • Two half rings: one large, one small (for attaching the sheath to the belt).
  • Thin cardboard or thick paper for the pattern.
  • Scissors.
  • Scotch.
  • A sharp knife (scalpel) for cutting out a pattern.
  • An awl with a hook at the end or a thick leather needle.
  • Strong thread.
  • Metal ruler.
  • A tool for piercing holes in the skin (you can also use improvised means).
  • Stationery clips (clothespins).
  • A simple pencil or marker.
  • Sandpaper for processing cuts.

How to make a template?

To make a template, prepare a piece of thin cardboard (thick paper).

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Fold a piece of paper in half.
  • Place a knife on the paper.
  • Trace the outline of the knife, leaving a distance of 8-10 cm wide on the blade side (seam allowance).
  • Cut the template so that you only duplicate the outline of the blade. There should be one outline of the handle. IN real life this contour will play the role of a loop for fastening with a half ring.

Important! The width of the template handle should match the prepared half ring.

  • Try the template on the knife and make sure everything is done correctly. The knife should fit freely into the template without falling out.
  • If you are happy with everything, then fold the template in half and cut off all excess. The fastening points must be level.
  • Tape the template around the edges. Place the knife inside the template, move it around to make sure that the blade does not get stuck anywhere and nothing interferes with its movement.

Leather blank

Now it’s time to make a pattern from leather so that you end up with a sheath for a good quality knife:

  • Draw the pattern along the contour from the wrong side. If you are not limited by the length of a piece of leather, then make a pattern with a margin to cut off everything unnecessary in the future.

Important! Leave “ears” along the edges of the sheath, which will later serve as a place for the buttons. The prepared area for the buttons should be such that there is still 1-2 mm of skin left around the bauble button.

  • On internal corners(where the base of the sheath meets the belt mount) make 2 holes. This is necessary so that during use the leather does not tear at the corners.

Important! To make holes, use a special or improvised tool in the form of a hollow tube of the required diameter.

  • Cut out the pattern with a sharp knife. It is better to make a straight cut with a cutter using a metal ruler. Before cutting out the pattern, secure it well in the holder.

Important! You can cut the pattern with a special rotary leather knife, razor or surgical scalpel. Sharp and precise actions will eliminate unevenness and stretching of the workpiece and make the cut perfectly even.

Skin formation

In order for the case to take the shape of a knife, it is necessary to add volume to the workpiece. Use the same knife as a form, proceeding as follows:

  • Take soft cling film and wrap it in several layers around the blade and handle of the knife. The cutter will become a little thicker, but the shape should be maintained.
  • Heat water in a low bowl, put into it that part of the workpiece, which, in fact, is a sheath. The part of the leather blank with the future fastener does not need to be wetted. After a few minutes, the skin, lowered into water, will begin to bubble. This air penetrates the pores of the skin.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the workpiece from the water using oven mitts and place it on a kitchen towel.
  • Blot excess water with a towel, place a knife wrapped in the wet workpiece cling film.
  • Secure the edges of the workpiece with paper clips (clothespins) as close to each other as possible.
  • Using your hands, press the wet leather against the blade and handle to form a sheath in the shape of the knife.

Important! While the workpiece is drying, check several times to see how well the shape is maintained. If necessary, correct the shape by wetting the skin and pressing with your fingers those places where the material does not lie according to your plan.

  • Leave the workpiece in the clamps overnight.
  • After the cover is completely dry, remove the clips.

Preparing for firmware

Before sewing a leather sheath, it is necessary to carry out a finishing trim and prepare a groove for the seam. If you have a special rotary knife, this will make the task easier. If there is no such tool, then use the tool you used to cut the leather:

  • Carefully cut off two layers of the edges of the workpiece. A lot of effort will be required, since you need to cut off two layers of dried and hardened skin. Sand the uneven cut of the leather with sandpaper.
  • Carefully make a groove on the cover. It is best to use a special tool for this purpose, for example, a semicircular leather chisel with a guide. A homemade chisel made from a needle from a medical syringe will also work.
  • Mark the groove with a special marking wheel or pencil line. Using a wheel or awl, manually mark the stitching. Choose the stitch pitch yourself - it is best to stick to a stitch length of 0.5 cm.
  • Place the knife sheath on wooden surface(board), punch holes with an awl. Use a hammer if necessary.
  • After making holes on the top of the cover, lift up the top edge and make holes on the bottom. The holes must match.

Important! Do not punch both aligned edges of the cover at once so that the holes are not too large.

  • Make sure all stitch holes are in a straight line.

Fixing the scabbard mount

The sheath can be attached to the belt in several ways:

  • Belt loop. It's best to sew the belt loop before you start sewing the edges of the cover. Fold the strip for the loop required size(so that when wearing the knife it does not cause inconvenience). Make 4-6 exactly matching holes in the top of the valve and on the cover body itself. Take a strong thread and sew a loop.
  • Half ring. Bend the fastening strip so that the belt fits and there is 1.5-2 cm left for fastening the ring and 1.5 cm for fastening to the base. Place a half ring inside the loop. To attach it, use the buttons-baubles and special tool to clamp them. To secure the mount at the base, buttons are suitable.

Knife sheath seam

Prepare a needle and very strong, strong thread. To sew a decorative stitch on a cover, use the single needle method as follows:

  1. Pull the thread from the bottom into one hole and stitch to the end of the seam.
  2. Work in the opposite direction, making exactly the same stitches. You should get a durable and beautiful finishing stitch.
  3. Fasten the end of the thread firmly. To do this, pass it through the middle of the thread itself, tighten it and secure it between the layers of skin. Cut the thread close to the skin, making sure that the knot does not unravel.
  4. Insert the knife into the sheath and admire the result.
  5. Treat the finished sheath with shoe wax or shoe polish to protect the leather from drying out and give it shine.

Important! You can sew the edges of the sheath using an awl with a hook.

To ready product If you are pleased with the end result, listen to the following tips.

To give the sheath rigidity, you can insert a strip of plastic cut to the shape of the blade inside. To fold the plastic in half, heat the fold line. The plastic seal can be glued to the leather before you sew the knife sheath with thread.

Add leather sheath You can also use a liner made of cotton fabric impregnated with wax. You can also use thick felt to make the liner:

  1. Cut a piece of felt large enough to form the liner and soak it with epoxy glue. To do this: place the liner in a plastic bag and wait for the epoxy to begin to harden.
  2. Protect the blade masking tape and electrical tape.
  3. Wrap the blade in the prepared felt bag and press lightly. You can press the ends of the liner together with clothespins.
  4. After the resin has hardened, remove the blade from the liner and remove the films from it.
  5. To give the liner the required shape, use a file.
  6. Don't forget to drill a small hole at the toe of the blade to drain any accidentally trapped water.
  7. Place the knife with the finished liner in the center of the wet workpiece and secure the structure with clamps on the side of the future seam.
  8. After the leather has dried, sew the finished leather blank.

Important! Be sure to soak the knife handle with a water-repellent compound to protect the wood from moisture.

Every self-respecting hunter keeps his knife in a sheath. And some even have several protective covers. Moreover, most prefer to make a knife sheath with their own hands. After all, making this simple product is quite simple, and making it yourself will give you the opportunity to make it convenient and to your taste. Despite the fact that now you can choose any material for this, real hunters do not change traditions - they make sheaths from leather or wood.

Leather scabbard: brief instructions

You start making a leather sheath for a knife with your own hands from a template.

  • Take a piece of paper, fold it in half and attach a knife to it.
  • Trace it along the contour, leaving a seam allowance of 8-10 cm wide on the blade side.
  • Cut out the drawn template in such a way as to duplicate only the outline of the blade, leaving the outline of the handle alone. The thing is that in real life this circuit will play the role of a loop for fastening with a half ring. It is important to take into account that in the future the width of the “handle” matches the half ring that you will prepare.
  • Now ready-made template place on a piece of leather. Please note that at the junction of the belt and the sheath it should be narrower than the length of the fastening by about 3 cm, and “ears” should be left along the edges of the sheath. They will be the place for the button after the pattern is folded in half. Moreover, their size should be such that there is 2 mm of skin left around the button.
  • Provide two holes at the inner corners. Place them in the place where the wide part of the pattern (under the sheath) meets the narrow part (under the handle). This is done so that during use the leather does not tear at the corners.

How to make a knife sheath with your own hands from leather? At first glance, everything is clear. But, nevertheless, this matter also has its own subtleties that will help you do it as best as possible.

Those who are familiar with making sheaths first-hand recommend:

  • Add a leather sheath with an insert. Plastic is suitable for this. To fold it in half, it is better to heat the fold line. After it is rolled up, both halves are made symmetrical using a file, repeating the shape of the knife blade.
  • To ensure that the sheath takes the shape of a knife, the cut leather is moistened for 20 minutes in warm water. After it softens, it is wrapped around a knife. It must first be wrapped in cellophane. The skin is fixed with clothespins and left there for a day.
  • During this time, you can make a suspension loop, and after the clothespins are removed from the sheath, glue it to the desired place and then stitch it.
  • In order for a knife sheath to be sewn with high quality with your own hands, holes are marked along the seam line every 3-5 mm and drilled. You need to sew a sheath with two needles, one of which has a single thread, and the other has a double thread.
  • After everything is stitched, the sheath must be soaked again for 10 minutes in warm water, insert a knife wrapped in cellophane into it and leave for a day.
  • When the sheath is dry, it should be treated with shoe wax or shoe polish.

Wooden scabbard

Some hunters find wooden sheaths more comfortable than leather sheaths. They are especially popular in Siberia and the Urals. Their simple and reliable design makes it possible to quickly remove and insert the knife without unfastening the fasteners. Moreover, you can do this with gloves. Such sheaths cannot be pierced in a hurry if the knife hits unsuccessfully.

Due to the fact that the sample is made in the form of a funnel, which evenly narrows from the mouth to the tip of the blade, the handle is tightly fixed in the sheath, actually jamming there. To get the knife, you just need to grab the handle tightly and squeeze your fingers tightly. From such an effort, he literally jumps out of his sheath. And you can decorate a wooden knife sheath with your own hands very beautifully.

Making sheaths using Ural-Siberian technology

The process of making a wooden sheath takes place in several stages:

  • select small planks (2 pieces), the vertical size of which will correspond to the length of the knife, and the horizontal size will be equal to two thicknesses of its handle;
  • carefully process the boards, ensuring they are tightly adjacent to each other;
  • place a knife on each of them and trace its outline;
  • On the end part from the handle side, mark the sampling depth for it;
  • the wood should be selected along the contour, the finished sample should take the shape of a funnel, evenly tapering from the mouth of the sheath to the tip of the blade;
  • between the sheath and the blade, provide a small gap (3‒4 mm).

If you couldn't fit the mouth to the handle perfectly, don't despair. From the inside at the mouth, glue a strip of fabric, having previously impregnated it with epoxy. Wrap the knife in plastic and press the fabric well against the mouth of the sheath.

The final stage of processing the sheath

After the selection has been made and the mouth has been adjusted to the handle, making a knife sheath with your own hands enters the final stage:

  • plan the outside of the scabbard, leaving a wall thickness of about 5 mm;
  • Next to the mouth, leave a side with a cross-section of 5x5 mm in order to secure the suspension loops on it in the future;
  • to increase the strength of the sheath, wrap the area under the side with several layers of nylon thread, then impregnate it with epoxy resin;
  • make several holes in the lower part of the sheath (at the tip) and stretch the same thread through them to strengthen the product;
  • do it at your discretion below vent(it may not exist);
  • now glue the prepared parts of the sheath;
  • After the glue has dried, sand the surface in a way convenient for you and saturate it with drying oil.

Additional elements and design of the scabbard

So, the knife sheath is completely made by hand and can be used for its intended purpose. In addition to them, a pendant or a belt loop is sewn from leather. Some people cover such a wooden case with leather for greater durability, but this, so to speak, is not for everyone.

The sheath can be left as is or used different finishes- burning, wood carving or inlay. It all depends on your taste.

Now that you have become familiar with the manufacturing technology, how to make a knife sheath with your own hands is no longer a question for you, but a reason to get down to business.

For protection, safety and security purposes, a knife sheath is required. Basic requirements are durability, convenience and reliability. At the first stage, the manufacturing material is selected from which the sheath for the knife will be made with your own hands. It should not change its properties under the influence of moisture and temperatures, and have a rigid base to protect the blade.

General manufacturing instructions

First you need to decide on the design. It is recommended to use a standard configuration - it will be difficult for a beginner to make a sheath with additional compartments and sections. Then choose the material of manufacture - leather, wood, thick fabric. It is not recommended to make the structure from plastic - there is a possibility of burrs appearing on the inside, which will lead to constant scratching of the blade.

Manufacturing stages:

  1. Sample. A thick sheet of paper is folded in half and a knife is placed on it. We trace the contours taking into account the seam allowance on the side of the sharp edge. For a leather knife sheath this is approximately 10 mm. It is better to make the fastening separately so that you can dismantle it and install another one.
  2. Preparation. Raw material cut according to the template, allowances for the connection are taken into account. Wooden scabbards are made without them, since the halves are often glued together with special glue. The insertion of the blade is checked - it should not experience resistance, but at the same time the backlash is minimal.
  3. Insert. It is located on the inside, on the side of the sharpened blade. Recommended material of manufacture: softwood or thick felt. This is necessary to maintain the sharpness of the blade. This is one of additional functions, which a leather sheath should have.
  4. Wearing method. The most common is hanging. On a wooden or leather sheath, a loop is made at the top of the structure. It is attached to the belt. The horizontal position is convenient for small blades. In addition to the top loop, another one is made, at the other edge of the structure.

To protect against moisture, the surface of the manufacturing material can be treated with special compounds. It is important that they do not exert negative influence on steel - did not lead to rusting or rapid wear of the blade.

Leather

Easiest for self-made leather scabbard. Material: saddle leather or rawhide. They are easy to process and retain their shape. The stitching ensures a tight fit between the edges. This can be done with an awl or with an overlocker.

For this type of sheath you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Awl or overlocker. If this is a one-time production, you can stop at an awl.
  • Thread up to 0.7 mm thick. It is treated with paraffin for better glide.
  • Glue and thinner. The seam is treated with this composition so that the case for the folding knife has maximum tightness and reliability.
  • Felt liner. An alternative is to install a plastic insert.

The stitched components are tested for strength, and the homemade sheath must be comfortable. The knife can be removed without effort; to secure it, you can install a small rubber insert on the inner surface, closer to the loop. She will press the blade, preventing the knife from falling out when walking.

Wooden

How to make a wooden case, and in what cases would it be advisable? This design has better aesthetic qualities than a leather product. But on operational characteristics inferior to them. To make a knife sheath, hardwoods are taken from wood - walnut, oak, beech. They are difficult to process, but the quality will be optimal.

Wooden scabbards are made according to the following scheme:

  1. The outline of the blade is cut out on two dies. Its dimensions should be 2-5 mm larger than the blade dimensions.
  2. The dies are cut, inner surface processed with a chisel. The processing depth is 1-2 mm greater than the thickness of the blade. Then sanding with sandpaper and polishing.
  3. Connecting workpieces and checking the fit of weapons.
  4. Gluing two parts. For this, standard wood adhesives are used.
  5. External surface treatment.

Wooden scabbards are difficult to produce, but subsequently you can apply a pattern or design to their surface, treat it with varnishes or paints. A leather loop is mounted on the belt for fastening.

You can also make a knife sheath from fabric. But such homemade products will not last long, since additional processing will be required to improve their performance. This may affect the condition of the blade.

Master class on making your own sheath for a hunting knife with your own hands.

Manufacturing:
1. Development of the scabbard. We measure out a piece of leather with some margin (in in this case remnants from previous products). We wrap the knife around the handle - we outline the mouth of the future sheath and cut it out.

2. Spacer. The blade of the knife is applied to the underside of the leather and traced along the cutting edge with a handle. We retreat 6-7 mm outward from the resulting line, draw a line parallel to it, and cut it out.

3. We try on the depth of the knife, apply a spacer and trace its outline. We cut off the excess - we get the outline of the future sheath.

Using a copier, we mark the holes for the seam, retreating 3-4 mm from the edge (as you like - some do not like a large seam space from the edge). We make holes with a revolver punch, glue the spacer, secure it with glue and wait for it to dry (20-30 minutes).

4. While the glue dries, make a sheath hanger (belt loop). We cut out an arbitrary suspension (in this case, a rigid one - the customer’s request), chamfer the edges on the front side, and singe off the lint. Next, we mark the future holes with a copier and punch them with a punch.

5. After the glue has dried, try the knife in place, wrap it with light tension and mark the outline of the second half of the sheath. Cut it out. We fasten with clamps (without glue) to check the movement of the knife - the knife should move quite tightly.

Immediately use an awl to mark holes for sewing on the belt loop, remove the clips and use an awl to punch holes for the belt loop. Then we mark the holes for the future seam on the second half of the sheath with a copier, and punch them with a punch.

After all these operations we get 2 parts.

6. We begin to sew on the belt loop. First the top, then the bottom (any seam: I sew short seams with one needle - I go one way, then back, I fuse the ends).

7. After sewing on the belt loop, glue the sheath along the seam and secure it with clips until it dries (20-30 minutes).

8. After drying, we pierce the spacer with an awl along the entire length of the seam.

9. Then, having measured a thread equal to 4 - 4.5 times the length of the seam, we thread its ends into two needles and stitch the sheath.

10. Wet the sheath to the middle (with alcohol, or with water (sometimes it leaves a darker outline!)), wrap the knife in cling film a couple of times and insert it into the sheath - we mold the mouth of the sheath to the blade - we get a small transition. Leave until completely dry. (if the sheath turns out to be too loose, you can leave it near the battery - this will make the skin shrink more than with room temperature. CAREFULLY! Do not place it on the battery - it may pull so tight that the sheath can only be thrown away later.)

11. Cut off the protruding sidewall and uneven sidewalls. Sand with 8H sandpaper. We singe off the lint.

12. Impregnate with cyanoacrylate (second glue) CAUTION!!! Severely irritates mucous membranes! Produce only in a well-ventilated area!!!.

Without good knife the hunter cannot do without. A large selection of models is available in stores, and some prefer to make this piece of equipment themselves. In any case, every knife must have a good sheath. They will securely fix the blade in the stowed position, protect it from dirt and moisture, and prevent injury. The sheath can be made at home with your own hands. The first point you need to decide on is what to make this piece of equipment out of. Durable sheaths can be made of leather, plastic, plywood or birch bark.

Making a Scandinavian type leather sheath

To make a leather sheath with your own hands, you need to take:

  • hard skin about 4 mm thick;
  • shoe knife;
  • knurling with a wheel for marking seams;
  • nylon thread;
  • awl;
  • a strong needle that can be used to sew leather;
  • pliers;
  • wood cutter with a semicircular notch.

The first step is to place the knife on a piece of leather and outline the contours of the sheath blank. In this case, on the sides from the edge of the blade you need to retreat 3 cm, at the bottom under the tip you need to leave an allowance of 1 cm. In the upper part, the workpiece needs to be cut to fit the handle.

You need to make markings for two blanks, and then cut them out. To do this, it is best to use a shoe knife. It must be held at an angle of 45 degrees so that in the end the two sheath blanks connect smoothly. If desired, the skin can be made thinner by simply scraping or cutting off the inner layer.

Then the skin needs to be soaked for 15 minutes under warm running water. After this, it becomes soft and pliable, and can easily be wrapped around the blade. Afterwards you need to mark the future seams. To do this, it is best to use knurling. Thanks to its use, the seams will be as smooth as possible, the thread pitch will be the same throughout. After this, you need to make holes in the sheath with an awl. They must come out through end cut skin, located at an angle of 45 degrees.

In order for the sheath to be strong and durable, it must be sewn with thread first on one side, and then passed through it again. reverse side. After this, the seam must be secured with knots. Thus, the main part of the sheath will be ready.

All that remains is to add a hanger to the blade case. To do this, you need to make a hole in the sheath using a wood cutter with a semicircular notch. If you don't have one, you can use a sharpened metal tube.

To make a pendant you need to use a strip of leather. At one end of it, you need to make a cutout in the shape of a pitchfork, 3 cm long and a third of the strip wide, and then prepare the corresponding holes in the sheath, thread the pendant through them and form it. A rivet can be added to the tip of the scabbard.

When making sheaths for Scandinavian-type knives, such as Swedish, Finnish or Puuko, it is not necessary to make a lock. Such knives fit almost completely into the case and are held well in them.

Finished leather sheaths can be painted. Another option is to polish them with a semi-abrasive wax paste, which will give the product a dark tint. Paint and wax applied to the skin will perfectly protect it from moisture. If you want to preserve the natural color of the leather, you can coat it with shoe wax.

Plastic sheath

Another option is to make a knife sheath from plastic sewer pipe. In addition to this, you will need:

  • saw;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • vice;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • rivets;
  • riveter;
  • ready-made fasteners for fixing the sheath on a belt or leather for its manufacture.

First you need to saw off a piece of pipe, which should be slightly longer than the blade. Then you need to make a longitudinal cut in it along the entire length. After this, the workpiece must be heated well and squeezed so that it becomes flat. To do this, you need to use a hair dryer at a temperature of 300 to 500 degrees.

Having warmed up the workpiece well, you need to insert a knife inside and squeeze it, giving it the required form. To do this, it is better to clamp the plastic in a vice. When the mold is ready, you need to trim off all excess, giving the workpiece the shape of a blade, leaving an allowance of about 2 cm in the area of the blade.

Then you need to drill holes in the plastic and insert rivets into them. At the same time, you should not press too hard so that they do not push through the material. It is most convenient to saw off the studs from the rivets using a drill.

The finished sheath can be painted black with regular spray paint. All that remains is to attach the fastener to the belt using a rivet - and the sheath for the hunting knife is ready.

Plywood scabbard

To make such a sheath for a hunting knife, you will need:

  • laminated plywood 1.5 mm thick;
  • a piece of thick felt;
  • epoxy resin and a hardener for it;
  • leather belt;
  • lavsan thread;
  • file;
  • sandpaper.

You need to cut two blanks from plywood in the shape of a knife. They should be a little bigger size than the blade itself. It is also necessary to cut two pieces of felt that match the shape and size of the plywood plates. They need to be glued to the plywood with epoxy.

Both blanks must be folded towards each other with the felt inside and a leather belt glued to them so that a loop is formed. It will be used to attach the knife to your belt.

Then the blanks need to be coated with epoxy resin on the outside and wrapped with lavsan threads. After the epoxy has dried, you need to repeat the procedure. Thus, it is better to apply at least 4 layers of thread so that the sheath is strong and durable.

When the epoxy resin under the last layer of thread has dried, the sheath needs to be shaped into the finished shape using a file and sandpaper. You can smooth out their corners or apply various grooves and embossings to their surface. To give the product a more presentable look, it would not be superfluous to perform other finishing. To do this, the sheath can be painted or wrapped with braid.

How to make a scabbard from birch bark?

You can also make a knife sheath with your own hands from birch bark. This is a material that has been tested for centuries. It is especially suitable for making a case with a wooden handle, as it will blend harmoniously with it. To make such a sheath, in addition to birch bark you will need:

  • scissors or knife for cutting material;
  • wide saucepan;
  • board 10 mm thick;
  • a small piece of leather about 2 mm thick;
  • cling film;
  • insulating tape;
  • office clips.

The first step is to cut three identical pieces from birch bark. They should have the shape of a shield with a pointed bottom edge. When making a sheath, the blanks will need to be folded in half and wrapped around the blade, placing them one on top of the other. Then you need to cut out two curved spacers from a pine board, which will be located in front of the cutting edge of the knife.

The birch bark should be placed in boiling water and cooked for 2 hours, then turn off the heat and leave to soak for a few more hours. After this, it will curl into a tube. While the birch bark is boiling, you need to attach a spacer made from a plank to the blade using electrical tape.

It is better to wrap the knife with cling film first. There should be a small distance between the spacer and the knife. To leave it, you need to place a piece of thin leather in front of the cutting edge.

Then you need to take a piece of birch bark out of the water, carefully unfold it and wrap it around the knife, securing it in the area cutting edge office clips. After 10 minutes, when the material takes the shape of a blade, you need to remove the clamps and put another piece of birch bark on top. Then the procedure must be repeated a third time. After this, leaving the clamps, the birch bark should be allowed to dry for an hour.

Then future sheaths must be coated moisture-resistant glue PVA between layers of birch bark and fasten again with clamps. After a day, the entire structure must be disassembled, separating the spacer from the plank from the blade. Next, you need to generously lubricate the spacers with PVA, use them to clamp the part of the sheath located in the area of the cutting edge of the knife in a vice, and leave for two weeks.

After this, you need to drill holes in the sheath and sew them together using thick thread or a thin strap. You also need to make an oval hole for a fastener for attaching to a belt. To make it, you can use a rope or a braid woven from leather strips.

With a high-quality sheath made from scrap materials, hunting knife will last as long as possible. Which manufacturing option to choose is a matter of taste. Any sheath will be good if you approach its manufacture correctly.
